According to ESuT, Rheinmetall has received an order from Ukraine for 20 Caracal airborne tactical vehicles in addition to five previously ordered. The contract is financed by the German federal government.
Deliveries of the tactical vehicles should begin in the coming months.
Rheinmetall currently manufactures Caracal for the armed forces of Germany, the Netherlands and Ukraine. At the same time, it was Ukraine that became the first operator of the Caracal.
Caracal is a four-wheel drive (4x4) tactical airborne vehicle based on a special version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV, known as the 464 series. The vehicle is equipped with a six-cylinder Euro-3 diesel engine with an output of 183 kW (248 hp), which can accelerate the vehicle up to 140 km/h.
Due to its relatively compact size (length 4.35 metres) and low weight, Caracal can be transported in internal cargo compartments and on external hangers of CH-47F Chinook and CH-53K King Stallion helicopters. Ukraine does not have such helicopters yet. However, even without airborne landing Caracal can be used for special operations.
