South Korean concern will have to repair a number of battery models, reported Business Insider. The problem concerns integrated charging control units (ICCU), which have long been complained about on specialised forums. Hyundai Motor has acknowledged that it will not be able to do without a recall programme.
Last year, problems in Hyundai and Kia electric cars were already tried to be fixed by updating the software and, in some cases, replacing the ICCU. However, owner complaints continued. Due to the defect, the electric car may fail to start, lose power, and not fully charge the battery.
The exact list of models from the risk group has not been made public. Probably, we are talking about the entire line of electric cars on the E-GMP platform. The defect has been identified on the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Genesis GV60 and Kia EV6. According to preliminary estimates, 170 thousand cars will be recalled in South Korea, and the total number of repaired electric cars will be about 600 thousand.
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has conducted its own investigation. According to the organisation, the work of the ICCU unit may be disturbed due to damage to the transistor as a result of increased current.
