Chinese auto giant BYD claims to be the first carmaker in the world to produce 7 million electric and hybrid vehicles.

The 7 millionth BYD new energy vehicle (as hybrids and electric cars are commonly called in China) rolled off the assembly line in Jinan on 25 March, the company's press service reported. The Denza N7 coupe-like electric crossover became the jubilee one.

In hindsight, BYD is rapidly developing the electrified car trend. The first million were produced in May 2021. Eighteen months later, the company produced another two million new-energy vehicles. The jump from three million to five million happened in just 9 months. The growth rate continued to accelerate, and BYD reached the 7 million mark in just 7 months.

The company notes that maintaining this pace of electrification was made possible by a robust supply chain and the ability to scale production. In 2023, BYD's cumulative annual sales of electric and hybrid vehicles rose to 3.02 million units.

Another bright spot is the Chinese automaker's international expansion. Last year, sales of passenger hybrids and electric cars outside China reached 240,000 units. That's a 337 per cent increase from 2022 and the highest of any Chinese exporter of electrified vehicles.

BYD is now officially present in 64 countries around the world. The company is implementing investment projects at plants in Thailand, Brazil, Uzbekistan and Hungary. This year, BYD will also be an official partner of the 2024 European Football Championship. The final stage of the competition will take place from 14 June to 14 July 2024 in Germany.
