The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that this breach could potentially mislead occupants about safety features, thereby not meeting the requisite safety standards. To resolve this issue, Rivian will send the missing label along with a recall notification letter to owners of the affected vehicles. This measure aims to bring the vehicles into compliance with federal safety regulations.
This is not the first instance of recalls for Rivian as previous issues have included faulty airbag sensors, improperly secured seat belts, and inaccurately fastened side airbags in different models at various times. For this specific case, Rivian clarified that although the required label often gets removed by users, their solution of mailing out replacement labels should suffice to correct the oversight.
According to regulations stipulated by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 571.208, airbag-equipped cars must prominently display an airbag label on either the dashboard or steering control hub. This regulation ensures that all passengers are adequately informed about how to position themselves safely within the vehicle in case of an accident.
