The legendary high-performance sedan with a 40-year history enters its seventh generation. The executive model from the BMW M division is equipped with an electrified drive system for the first time. This is a step perhaps even more significant than when the model abandoned its rear-wheel-drive layout in favour of an all-wheel-drive layout.
The M Hybrid system in the new BMW M5 combines a 4.4-litre V8 engine with classic high-speed character with an electric motor whose performance characteristics are tuned specifically for the BMW M5 and which is integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The internal combustion engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology alone develops a maximum output of 430 kW/585 PS and a maximum torque of 750 Nm. The maximum output of the electric motor is 145 kW/197 PS. The nominal torque is 280 Nm, but the pre-transmission stage allows the effective torque at the transmission input to be increased to 450 Nm.

The combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor is based on the same principle as in the BMW M Hybrid V8 racing car. The eight-cylinder engine can be revved up to 7,200 rpm. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h as standard, but the limiter can be raised to 305 km/h if the M Driver's Package is ordered.
The sports exhaust system of the new BMW M5 "emphasises dynamism with a multifaceted and emotionally exciting engine sound". It features electrically controlled continuously variable flaps and two pairs of twin tailpipes familiar from other M models, each with 100-millimetre black chrome overlays.
The acoustic accompaniment of the electric motor's power delivery is provided by the BMW IconicSounds Electric system. This M-specific electric drive sound provides "authentic responses to accelerator movements" when the car is operating in all-electric mode. When the drive system is configured accordingly, it also generates a thrilling track to emphasise the arrival of additional electric power over and above that of the V8 engine.
In all-electric mode of operation, the new BMW M5 can reach speeds of up to 140 kilometres per hour. The high-voltage battery located low in the car's underbody has 18.6 kWh of usable capacity than provides an electric range of 67-69 kilometres on the WLTP cycle. The combined charging unit of the new BMW M5 allows for AC charging with a capacity of up to 7.4 kW.
The power generated by the combustion engine and electric motor is transmitted to the wheels via the M xDrive all-wheel drive system. However, the driver can also select 2WD mode. In this mode, torque is transmitted exclusively to the rear wheels when DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) is deactivated. This advanced version of M xDrive is specially adapted to the performance characteristics of the M Hybrid system, as is the electronically controlled M active differential on the rear axle.
The new BMW M5 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds. Thus, the 0-100 km/h acceleration of the new generation is 0.1 seconds slower than that of the previous generation M5 (F90). This difference is obviously due to the 24 per cent increase in the weight of the car and the 16 per cent increase in power could not compensate for it.

Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and active steering that turns the rear wheels by up to 1.5 degrees as standard. The special M setup, individually selectable settings and the ability to individually adjust the dampers at each wheel optimise the body's relationship with the road and maximise the car's capabilities - from everyday driving comfort to race-ready. Turning the rear wheels as required improves directional stability at high speeds, as well as manoeuvrability and comfort when manoeuvring.
M light-alloy wheels (20 inches on the front axle, 21 inches at the rear) are included as standard equipment and complemented by high-performance tyres.
The new BMW M5 will have its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England in July 2024, with production at the BMW Group's Dingolfing plant starting the same month. The introduction of the new BMW M5 to global markets will begin in November 2024 and the new BMW M5 Touring will be unveiled at the same time.
In Germany, prices for the new BMW M5 start at €144,000 for the sedan, with the station wagon €2,000 more expensive. In the US, prices for the new 2025 model year BMW M5 sedan start at $119,500 plus $1,175 destination and handling.
