These new engines show Toyota's commitment to keeping traditional gas engines around, even as many car makers are moving towards electric vehicles. The company believes there's still room for improvement in gas engine technology.
According to a report from Best Car, which cites inside sources, the 2.0-liter engine will come in different versions. The most powerful one, meant for racing, could produce a whopping 592 horsepower (441 kW / 600 PS) without any electric assist. That's over 300 horsepower per liter, which is impressive for a small engine.
For regular road cars, Toyota plans two versions of this engine. The high-performance variant will deliver 395 horsepower (294 kW / 400 PS) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque. A less powerful version will still offer a respectable 296 horsepower (221 kW / 300 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.
Toyota might use these engines in some exciting new models. There's talk about a possible MR2 roadster comeback, which could come in both electric and gas-powered versions. The top-of-the-line GRMN performance model could use the 2.0-liter engine with Toyota's GR-Four all-wheel-drive system. This version might only be sold in Japan in limited numbers and could cost around $70,000.
Another potential model is a new Celica. This would be a front-engined, two-door coupe, also using the 2.0-liter engine and the GR-Four system.
In May 2024, Toyota officially confirmed they're working on these new engines. They're doing this together with Subaru and Mazda. The company said these engines will be highly efficient, powerful, ready for hybrid setups, and able to use alternative fuels.
Toyota also mentioned that the new 2.0-liter engine will be more powerful than their current turbo 2.4-liter engine. It will also be smaller, more fuel-efficient, and meet strict emission rules. Plus, it will be able to run on carbon-neutral fuels, which could keep it relevant even after bans on traditional gas engines.
