Patrick Aquino, who leads the EUMB, says they'll introduce draft laws later this year or early next year. He told reporters:
"We're hopeful that those regulations will come out after public consultation through the fourth quarter of this year or early next year"
The government hasn't decided yet how many chargers each station will need. They're still figuring out the details of how it'll all work.
According to the Philippine News Agency, the Department of Energy might be able to say no to permits for gas stations that don't have room for chargers.
Aquino explained they're thinking about how to make the rules fair for all sizes of gas stations:
"Probably we'll base it on the size. We'll work with our industry partners in that sector to determine, let's say, if you have more than four pumps, we'll put up one… We'll base it on that. Because you're also aware that there are smaller stations, which only have one pump, of course, it might be unreasonable for us to require them."
In recent months, the Philippines has made other moves to encourage EV use. They've extended the tax break on importing EVs until 2028. And just this July, Vietnamese EV maker VinFast opened its first showrooms in the country.
