Tesla has pushed back the release of the Cybertruck's range extender battery pack. The company now plans to launch the add-on in mid-2025, later than the early 2025 target they originally set.

The range extender, first announced in late 2023, is a supplementary battery pack that fits in the truck bed. Tesla promised it would boost the dual-motor Cybertruck's range from 340 miles (547 km) to over 470 miles (547 km). For the tri-motor Cyberbeast, the range would jump from 320 miles (515 km) to 440 miles (708 km).

Now, Tesla has adjusted these estimates. With the range extender, the dual-motor version will go 445+ miles. The tri-motor Cyberbeast will reach 440 miles, or 415+ miles with all-terrain tires. Tesla plans to sell this extra battery for $16,000.

The Cybertruck has been selling well, but it's faced some challenges. When Tesla unveiled the prototype in 2019, they set ambitious goals for price and range. The entry-level model was supposed to start at $39,900, with a 250+ mile range. The dual-motor version was priced at $49,900 with 300+ miles, and the tri-motor at $69,900 with an impressive 500+ mile range.

Reality has turned out differently. The all-wheel-drive Cybertruck now starts at $79,990, while the tri-motor version begins at $99,900 - a $30,000 increase from the initial promise. The single-motor, rear-wheel drive model hasn't hit the market yet.
