Plug-in hybrids usually only manage 30 to 40 miles (40 to 60 km) on electric power alone. Many see them as a stepping stone to full electric vehicles. But CATL's new battery might change that view.
The Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery doesn't just offer more range. It also charges super fast. In just 10 minutes, it can add over 174 miles (280 km) of range.
CATL has used some clever tech to make this battery work so well. They've tweaked the materials in the cathode and come up with a new electrolyte mix. They've also added a tiny protective layer to stop unwanted reactions.
The new system controls the battery's charge 40% more accurately. This means drivers can use more of the battery's power over its lifetime.
This new battery could be a game-changer for plug-in hybrid owners. It tackles the big worry many have about running out of electric power mid-trip.
We won't have to wait long to see these batteries in action. Next year, they'll be in 30 different hybrid models. Carmakers like Chery, GAC, Geely, and VOYAH are already lining up to use them.
