Mercedes-Benz has presented Pope Francis with an electric "Papamobile" based on the G-Class G580, continuing a 94-year tradition of supplying vehicles to the Vatican.

Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, personally delivered the new "Papemobile" to Pope Francis. It is the first electric "Papemobile" based on the new G-Class, continuing the 45-year history of using the G-Class as the basis for papal vehicles.

The new Popemobile is based on the G580, but has been specially adapted for the Pope's needs. The car is powered by four electric motors, although the exact power output of this version is not disclosed. The regular G580 develops 587bhp and 1,164Nm of torque. A 116 kWh battery provides a range of 468 kilometres on the WLTP cycle.

Mercedes-Benz worked closely with the Vatican to develop this "Papamobile". They tuned the powertrain so that it performs well at the low speeds required for public appearances.

The rear of the SUV features a centre swivel seat with two additional seats on either side. To make room for this setup, the roof was removed from the centre pillar to the rear. Mercedes-Benz designers also added a separate hard top for rain protection.

On the outside, the G-Class retains its classic pearl white colour. The centre pillar is now part of the side panel, the left rear door is welded to the bodywork and the hinges of the right rear door have been moved to the opposite side.

This new electric papamobile is in line with Pope Francis' encyclical "Laudato Si", which emphasises the need for sustainability.
