The Mercedes-Benz Vans plant in Charleston, South Carolina (USA) has assembled the 5 millionth Sprinter van. The jubilee model was an electric eSprinter designed for FedEx.

The Sprinter debuted in 1995, replacing the Mercedes TN (T1) series. The new model received a range of class-leading safety features, including ABS and later ESP stabilisation system. The van also featured a more aerodynamic design, reduced fuel consumption and a range of powerful but economical petrol and diesel engines.

By the time the second generation was launched in 2006, the Sprinter had become a favourite in a wide range of applications from courier services to small businesses and motorhomes. The new model offered even more improvements: increased payload capacity, a more spacious interior and an expanded choice of body styles, including cab chassis and minibuses. Mercedes-Benz also expanded its market presence by marketing the Sprinter under various brands, including Dodge and Freightliner in North America.

The third generation, introduced in 2018, took the Sprinter to a new level. The model received the MBUX multimedia system, telematics services and advanced driver assistance systems, turning it into a mobile office. The range of modifications is still impressive: more than a thousand variants based on different bodies, chassis types, drives, tonnage and equipment. In the current version, both front-wheel drive and two transmission types are available, including a nine-speed automatic with torque converter.

In addition to the plant in Charleston (USA), production of the Sprinter and the electric version of the eSprinter takes place in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfeld (Germany).
