On 16 May, the first production FAW-Toyota bZ5 electric crossover rolled off the assembly line at the FAW plant in Tianjin. Sales of the novelty in the Chinese market will start in June.

The FAW-Toyota bZ5 is based on the e-TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. Overall length is 4780 mm, wheelbase is 2880 mm. The 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor is mounted on the front axle and is supplied by BYD's FinDreams subsidiary.

The batteries are also developed by BYD: lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade batteries are used in two capacity options:

  • 65.28 kWh - a range of 550 km on the CLTC cycle;
  • 73,984 kWh - a range of 630 km.

One of the key features of the bZ5 is the Momenta 5.0 semi-autonomous driving system adapted for urban environments. It consists of 33 sensors, including a roof-mounted lidar, five millimetre radars and seven cameras. The cabin has nine airbags.

Pre-orders in China began in April. The starting price of the version with a range of 550 km is 130,000 yuan (about $18,000). A version with the same mileage but an extended driver assistance package will cost 160,000 yuan (approximately US$22,200).
