Volvo Trucks has announced the launch of an automatic stop/start engine system for heavy trucks. According to the manufacturer, this is a world premiere for this segment of automotive technology.

The new development by Volvo is created in-house and based on existing I-See and I-Roll technologies. The engine stop/start function works by constantly monitoring road surface data. The engine temporarily shuts off when a descent is detected on the route. While the engine is off, fuel consumption is zero, and consequently, CO2 emissions are absent.

As explained by Jan Hjelmgren, head of product management at Volvo Trucks, the implementation of such solutions is part of the company's strategy to reduce the carbon footprint of transport operations. He emphasized that Volvo will continue to improve internal combustion engines to reduce their negative impact on the environment.

The system is activated at speeds over 60 km/h and, according to Volvo's calculations, allows additional fuel savings of up to 1% and reduced CO₂ emissions, in addition to existing saving technologies. The benefits include not only environmental friendliness but also reduced operating costs for equipment owners.

The stop/start function will be available on Volvo FH and FH Aero models with 13-liter diesel engines. Orders for trucks with the new system will be possible starting November 2025.

Volvo's decarbonization strategy also includes the development of engines using renewable fuels, expanding the range of electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles.
