Subaru has for the first time started assembling an electric vehicle for the global market at its own facility in Japan. The production of the E-Outback has started at the Subaru Yajima Plant, north of Tokyo.

Until now, the brand's only fully electric model — Subaru Solterra — was assembled at the development partner's site in Toyota City, near Nagoya.

From August 2025 to January 2026, the facility was upgraded for the production of the new E-Outback battery model. Now, electric vehicles, gasoline engines, and hybrids can be assembled on the same production line.

The E-Outback model became Subaru's third electric vehicle developed jointly with Toyota, after Solterra and Uncharted. In the US, it is sold under the name Trailseeker. The similar Toyota model is called bZ4X Touring.

The main difference between the E-Outback and the bZ4X Touring — Toyota is available in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive versions, while Subaru is exclusively all-wheel drive. According to Subaru Germany, the model is expected to enter the German and European markets in the second half of 2026. The battery, with a capacity of 74.7 kWh, will provide a range of approximately 450 km in the WLTP cycle. This figure seems conservative as Toyota, with a similar battery, claims up to 528 km.

In addition to the E-Outback, an updated Solterra will go on sale in 2026. The Toyota bZ4X relative will charge faster and travel more on a single charge. Furthermore, in the spring of 2026, Uncharted — the Toyota C-HR+ equivalent — will appear in Germany.
