MAN Truck & Bus has presented a new version of the MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4, designed for transporting particularly heavy loads. Such as wind turbine components, transformers, and other large industrial components.

The new tractor is designed for a maximum train weight of up to 250 tons. At the heart of the MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4 lies a four-axle chassis.

The base vehicle will be assembled at the MAN Truck & Bus plant in Munich. After that, the trucks will be sent to the MAN Truck Modification Center in Wittlich, Germany, where the tractor will be equipped for heavy-duty loads, including:

  • reinforced cooling systems
  • additional fuel and hydraulic tanks
  • specialized coupling devices for heavy trailers

The machine is equipped with a straight-six diesel D3876 engine with a power output of 640 hp. The maximum torque is 3,000 N·m. The peak is available in a range of about 900 to 1,380 rpm, which is especially important when driving at low speeds with a high load.

The engine works with an automated 12-speed TipMatic 12.30 OD gearbox. The transmission integrates a hydrodynamic coupling, which facilitates moving off the spot with extremely high loads and smoothly increases the transfer of torque.

Various transmission modes are provided, including a special mode for transporting loads up to 250 tons, as well as an economical mode for lighter loads. A retarder is used for prolonged braking on descents, which reduces the load on the main braking system when driving with a heavy trailer.

The key element of the equipment is the heavy module behind the cab, the so-called "heavy load tower". It contains:

  • additional compressed air receivers with a capacity of 160 liters
  • a 960-liter diesel fuel tank
  • a 290-liter hydraulic system tank

The dual-circuit hydraulic system can develop pressures up to 300 bar. It provides operation for the steering systems of multiaxial heavy trailers. An additional radiator is also installed there, which helps to maintain a stable engine temperature at low speeds and under high loads.

The tractor is equipped with a JOST JSK 38 C 3.5-inch diameter fifth wheel. The design provides mobile mounting, which allows for optimal load distribution over the chassis. Additionally, a towing hitch is installed at the front for either towing or pushing mode, and an automatic trailer coupling can be installed at the rear.

The first customer

The first unit of the MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4 was handed over to the German company BFS, which provides specialized equipment for heavy transport.

The company plans to use the new tractor for short-term projects that require the transportation of particularly heavy loads.
