Volkswagen has launched pre-sales in China for the ID. Unyx 08 crossover, which combines German engineering with Xpeng's autopilot and a range of up to 730 km.

Dimensions and "non-standard" design

ID. Unyx 08 is a five-meter crossover. The exact dimensions are 5000/1954/1672 mm with a wheelbase of 3030 mm. The appearance of the vehicle noticeably differs from the usual "streamlined" style of the ID series. Here we see sharp angles, an aggressive front end, and complex lighting technology. The daytime running lights consist of 400 independent LED elements supporting various animations.

An interesting solution is the glossy black panels on the front fenders and doors. They do not have a practical purpose but visually make the front part of the car look longer. The crossover is standardly equipped with 20 or 21-inch wheels, hidden door handles, and an illuminated brand logo at the rear.

Xpeng "brains" and computing power

The pride of the model is the intelligent driving system (ADAS) developed in collaboration with Xpeng. It is based on the Vision-Language-Action (VLA) model, relying on data from 11 cameras, 3 millimeter-wave radars, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. All this "hardware" operates under the control of a chip with a peak power of 1500 TOPS. This allows the crossover to confidently operate in autopilot mode (NOA) both on highways and on complex urban streets.

Inside, the driver is greeted by architecture familiar to Chinese models: two 15-inch screens and a minimal number of physical buttons. The interface performance is ensured by the Snapdragon 8295P processor. Also included is a refrigerator, 10-point massage seats, and a premium Unyx Sound audio system with 20 speakers.

Technical specs and prices

Volkswagen ID. Unyx 08 is offered with two powertrain options. The base version has a single electric motor on the rear axle with a power output of 230 kW (308 hp). The all-wheel-drive modification delivers a total of 370 kW (496 hp). Two LFP battery options from CATL with capacities of 82.4 and 95 kW·h are available. The range according to the CLTC cycle is from 630 to 730 km, depending on the version.

Prices for the novelty in China have already been announced: from $34,760 to $43,450. For comparison, the popular ID.4 Crozz costs from $21,720 there, and the larger ID.6 up to $41,135. The first buyers who make a symbolic deposit of $14 will receive a discount of $290, free home charging, and a lifetime warranty.

The official start of sales is expected to be announced at the Beijing Auto Show at the end of April.
