A new cheaper version with less range and power but a larger trunk joins the MG4 EV.

The MG4 EV Urban was introduced in China back in March 2025, and its UK market launch took place in January 2026. The base price in Germany has been known since early April. And now the model is also available for configuration.

Despite a name similar to the MG4 EV, the MG4 EV Urban is built on a different architecture called E3. The main change is the switch to front-wheel drive. The charging port in the new model is also located at the front.

The appearance has also changed. The shapes have become softer, the lights are no longer so sharp, and the overall silhouette is less arrow-like. The rear light design with a continuous line and distinctive arrow indicators refers to the design of the MG Cyberster roadster, adding a certain recognizability to the model in traffic.

When size matters

The Urban turned out to be 108 mm longer than its sibling (4395 mm versus 4287 mm). The wheelbase also grew to 2750 mm, which positively affected the legroom for the rear passengers. But the real triumph is the trunk. Its volume ranges from 470 to 1362 liters, which is a good hundred liters more than the standard model. Additionally, there is a 98-liter niche hidden under the floor - the perfect place for cables or small items.

Technology: no records, but enough for the city

In Europe, the model is offered with two types of LFP (lithium-iron-phosphate) batteries. The base version with 43 kWh delivers 110 kW (150 hp) and provides a range of up to 325 km according to the WLTP cycle. The higher version with a 54 kWh battery has a capacity of 118 kW (160 hp) and can travel up to 416 km on a single charge. The dynamics in both cases are calm: about 9.5 seconds to reach 100 km/h.

Interestingly, the company plans to add a version with a semi-solid-state battery by the end of the year, which could be a serious asset in the competition. The DC fast charging power is 82-87 kW, allowing you to recharge from 10% to 80% in about half an hour.

Interior and savings

Everything inside is familiar: the same 12.8-inch touchscreen multimedia and steering wheel as with older models. However, some savings had to be made on materials. There is significantly more hard plastic here, and the instrument panel in front of the driver has decreased to 7 inches (in the older MG4 EV it is 10 inches).

Prices and competitors

The main argument for the MG4 EV Urban is its price. It starts at 24,990 euros. For comparison, the standard MG4 EV costs from 42,990 euros. With such a price tag, the Chinese car enters the territory of compact electric cars like the Citroen e-C3 Aircross or Hyundai Inster while offering significantly more space. Even the VW ID.3 Neo, which costs about 33,995 euros, seems an expensive pleasure compared to the Urban.
