The era of the smallest Mercedes-Benz car is coming to an end. The company is going to stop production of the A-Class in two and a half years and focus on more expensive models.

By information  Handelsblatt management of Mercedes-Benz has decided that the fourth-generation A-Class, released in 2018, will remain on the assembly line in hatchback and sedan bodies until 2025. This is where the history of the model will end - there will be no next generation.

The Stuttgart-based automaker will also phase out its B-Class compact van, according to the report. The model currently on sale belongs to the third generation, which also appeared in 2018 and is related to the A-Class.

The decision to phase out the A- and B-Class comes as Mercedes-Benz hopes to increase the number of all-electric models while expanding its range of more profitable luxury models. The changes will raise entry-level Mercedes-Benz prices from less than 30,000 euros currently to around 40,000 euros.

However, the German automaker is not completely abandoning the compact car segment. Handelsblatt specified that the company will release successors to today's Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan (and CLA Shooting Brake), Mercedes-Benz GLA and Mercedes-Benz GLB in the future.

The next generation CLA sedan, CLA Shooting Brake, GLA and GLB are expected to migrate from the MFA platform to the new Mercedes-Benz MMA architecture. The latter allows both hybrid and purely electric models, and is also compatible with the new MB.OS operating system.
