BMW has announced in America a new modification of the i4 electric car with a smaller battery and less power from a single engine.

The BMW i4 will be available from autumn 2021 in two versions - eDrive40 and M50. Now the Bavarian company has unveiled the third and cheapest variant of the i4 called the eDrive35.

The BMW i4 eDrive35 uses the same 5th generation eDrive transmission as the other versions of the model. However, the nominal capacity of the battery is 70.2 kWh, and the useful capacity is 66 kWh. In comparison, the eDrive40 has a nominal battery capacity of 81 kWh.

As a result, the i4 eDrive35 has a claimed range of 260 miles (418 km) in the US EPA test cycle versus 282 miles (453 km) for the eDrive40.

The only engine is installed at the rear. In the new modification of the BMW i4, the engine provides power up to 281 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. This is enough to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.8 seconds, which is 0.3 seconds slower than the older version.

The BMW i4 eDrive35 has a suggested starting price of $52,395, or $4,500 less than the eDrive40. By the way, the top-end i4M50 with a twin-engine power plant starts at $67,300.

Production of the 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35 will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022 at the BMW Group plant in Munich, Germany. The first units are expected to arrive in the US in the first quarter of 2023.
