H2X Global, an Australian start-up, is working to convert the Ford Ranger into a hydrogen-powered vehicle named Warrego. This car retained the original all-wheel-drive system, but the engine was replaced with an all-electric.

H2X Global has swapped out the donor pick-up's diesel engine with a 260 kW (348 hp) electric motor and a 60 kW (80 hp) hydrogen fuel-cell, all housed in a supercapacitor hybrid system of the previous-generation Ford Ranger. A supercapacitor can be charged and discharged more quickly than traditional lithium-ion batteries found in most electric cars, as well as having a longer life.

The electric motor is linked to the vehicle's standard transfer case, allowing the hydrogen fuel-cell truck to retain all-wheel-drive. Hydrogen is kept in a tank composed of advanced polymer and carbon fiber that is pressurized to 700 bar, for a claimed driving range of up to 450 kilometers (280 miles) when completely filled.

The Warrego is now undergoing final validation and verification testing procedures in the Netherlands as it heads towards gaining European and global certification. Australian certification testing will commence soon.

The Warrego is H2X Global's first application to demonstrate the company's capabilities platform that will be used as a basis for the upcoming all-new H2X Darling Delivery Van in a couple of years. This will be the first of the fully developed and optimised vehicles from H2X.

After the vehicle is ready to go through the process of global homologation, optimisation and improvement efforts are taking place to enhance its performance.

The Warrego will be available to customers over the coming months and in line with the availability of hydrogen. The vehicle will be produced in Europe and Australia at the H2X facility in Sale, Victoria.

In September 2021, H2X Global announced that the Warrego would be priced from 189,900 AUD (122,550 USD) plus on-road fees in 'Warrego 66' trim and increase to 235,000 AUD (151,650 USD) for the mid-range '90', as well as 250,000 AUD (161.255 USD) for the flagship '90 XR'.

The company received 250 orders for the Warrego hydrogen ute from commercial customers within four days, however pricing has since been removed from H2X Global's website.
