The new electric version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which was originally previewed in concept car form at the 2021 Munich motor show, is set to become Mercedes-Benz's ninth dedicated electric model when it goes on sale in 2024.
The EQG is based on the latest model of the G-Class, which is called W463 internally within Mercedes-Benz. This new EQG builds off a slightly modified version of the steel ladder frame chassis that has been used by models with internal combustion engines. The long-time partner Magna Steyr will produce both versions in Austria.
Four electric motors power the EQG's new electric drivetrain, one motor for each wheel. Low-mounted front motors are situated within each axle, while newly developed de Dion-style rear motors are integrated more inboard within a special rear axle designed specifically for the EQG. Each electric motor is able to provide individual drive to each wheel through a mechanical two-speed gearbox, offering both high and low-range gearing.

Although Mercedes-Benz has not yet released all the information regarding the powertrain, battery, and range, we do know that the battery capacity will be close to 100 kWh.
Early road-going prototypes of the EQG confirm that it will retain the same characteristic square-rigged exterior styling as other existing G-Class models. Although they are disguised, they feature standard body panels together with a number of small but unique details, which were hinted at on the earlier concept. These include a new-look front bumper and a blanked-off grille.
