The Dongfeng Mengshi M-Hero 917, an high-end off-road electric SUV, set to hit the Chinese market this year.

Based on the M-Terrain concept car, which was unveiled in 2022, the specs for the M-Hero 917 were recently released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The M-Hero 917's design is similar to the official images that have been released. In terms of size, the SUV appears to be smaller than previously thought, measuring 4,987/2,080/1,935 mm with a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. Despite its large size, the 917 has relatively small wheels, measuring 275/65 R20. According to the MIIT, the SUV has room for five passengers and boasts approach and departure angles of 31 degrees. The curb weight of the M-Hero 917 ranges from 3,130 to 3,293 kg, depending on the powertrain type, making it a heavy vehicle. Its gross weight reaches 3,740 to 3,800 kilos.

The M-Hero 917's powertrain options include EV (100% electric vehicle) and EREV (extended-range electric vehicle). The all-electric version features four electric motors with a combined power of 800 kW (1,088 hp) and a combined torque of 1,400 Nm. The battery, manufactured by CATL, is ternary (NMC) with a reported capacity of 140 kWh. Despite the impressive battery capacity, the M-Hero 917's range is limited to 505 km due to its heavy weight.

The EREV version of the M-Hero 917 is equipped with three electric motors, with two on the rear axle and one on the front axle. As a result, its combined power and torque are reduced to 600 kW (816 hp) and 1,050 Nm, respectively. The EREV version also features a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol-powered engine that generates 145 kW (197 hp). The battery, also manufactured by CATL, has a capacity of 66 kWh, giving the 917 a mixed range of 800 km.

The M-Hero 917 is set to hit the Chinese market this year, with a starting price of 700,000 RMB (103,700 USD). It will compete with the BYD Yangwang U8, which also boasts four electric motors and off-road capabilities, but is considered more luxurious and longer than the M-Hero 917. Another potential competitor is the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQG.
