The Mazda6 has been discontinued in the UK market after a 20-year run due to declining sales in its segment. Mazda UK stated in a statement to Autocar that customers have shifted their priorities towards purchasing SUVs, leading to the discontinuation of the 6, a rival to the Skoda Superb.

The Japanese automaker will now concentrate on the Mazda CX-60 plug-in hybrid, the upcoming diesel version of the CX-60, and the Mazda CX-5, which have proven to be popular choices among UK customers. The 6, which was available in both sedan and wagon body styles, was removed from sale in the US last year but is still available for purchase in some European countries.

The 6 was equipped with 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter petrol engines, but lacked electrification options compared to Mazda's recent models. Over its three generations, Mazda sold a total of 169,123 units of the 6 in the UK. The first generation included the 6 MPS, a high-performance saloon with 256 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, capable of reaching 0-62 mph in 6.6 seconds. The 6 was updated in 2007 and again in 2013.

The decline in sales of the 6 has also been felt in Europe, not just the UK. According to industry analyst Jato Dynamics, Mazda sold 4,865 units on the continent in 2021, a 28% decrease from 2020. By November 2022, sales had further declined to 4,104 units for the year.

On the other hand, Mazda's crossover and SUV models have seen significant sales growth. By the end of November 2022, the CX-30 had sold 32,636 units, the CX-5 27,828 units, and the new CX-60 8,162 units. Given Mazda's focus on the expanding SUV market, it is unlikely that the 6 will be replaced.
