Toyota is developing a manual transmission for its hybrid vehicles, according to a recently filed patent application. Unlike most hybrids that use automatic transmissions, this system will enable drivers to manually shift gears.

The patent was filed in August 2021, published in February, and was initially discovered by The Drive.

The patent describes a clutch that connects to both the pedal and the ECU, allowing the driver to select gears as they would with a traditional manual transmission. The system manages the interplay between the internal combustion engine, electric motor, and transmission, with multiple clutch cylinders and a shuttle valve. This will help the car shift seamlessly between engine and electric power.

The clutch system also allows the driver to depress the clutch regardless of the ECU's preferences, with the option for a driving mode that solely relies on the clutch pedal.

Toyota's latest patent reveals the automaker's commitment to electric powertrains while continuing to appeal to driving enthusiasts who prefer manual gearboxes.
