BMW unveiled the highly anticipated 2024 5 Series (G60), and this time, it comes with a thrilling addition—the fully electric variant called i5. Combining the elegance and sophistication of the 5 Series with cutting-edge electric technology, the BMW i5 is set to make a bold statement in the world of luxury electric vehicles.

While BMW saw higher sales of its X5 SUVs compared to the 5-Series sedans last year, the 5-Series remains a crucial model for the company. The 2024 Five is particularly significant as it marks the first time the iconic 5-Series is offered with an electric drivetrain. BMW has chosen to launch both the electric i5 and the combustion-powered 5-Series together, showcasing their commitment to electrification.

The BMW i5 comes in two variants: the eDrive40, a single-motor, rear-wheel drive model starting at $66,800, and the high-performance M60 xDrive, equipped with dual motors and all-wheel drive, priced at $84,100. The eDrive40 boasts 335 horsepower, reaching 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds, while the M60 xDrive takes power to a whole new level with a total of 590 horsepower, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in a blistering 3.7 seconds. Both variants feature an 84.3 kWh underfloor battery pack and have impressive charging capabilities, allowing for a 10-80% charge in just 30 minutes with a 205 kW DC charger.

The 2024 BMW 5-Series, in both electric and combustion versions, shares the same platform, BMW's CLAR architecture. While the exterior design retains the classic elegance of a traditional sedan, the new 5-Series exhibits modern touches, such as flush-fit door handles and an optional illuminated grille surround. The i5 distinguishes itself with unique wheel designs, badges, and a blanked grille, clearly signaling its electric nature.

Inside the 5-Series, BMW introduces the latest iteration of its iDrive infotainment system. A curved screen setup, consisting of a 12.3-inch cluster and a 14.9-inch media display, debuts in the 5-Series, along with the iDrive 8.5 operating system. The new system offers a user-friendly layout, gesture control, and enhanced voice support. The traditional rotary iDrive controller is still present, pleasing fans of the classic BMW experience. Additional options include vegan leather seats and a full panoramic roof, further elevating the luxurious ambiance.

The 2024 BMW 5-Series is not just about electrification—it's also packed with cutting-edge technology. Passengers can enjoy in-car gaming through the AirConsole platform, allowing for entertainment while stationary. The i5 variant includes the touch-sensitive Interaction Bar from the 7-Series, providing intuitive control over the climate system. While the combustion models offer the same tech as an option, it comes at an extra cost.

In terms of autonomous driving capabilities, the 5-Series features an optional Highway Assistant system, enabling hands-off driving at speeds of up to 85 mph. The car can even change lanes when the driver confirms the maneuver by checking the mirrors. Furthermore, a fully automated parking system comes as standard, ensuring effortless parking in any situation.

To enhance the driving experience, the new 5-Series incorporates advanced chassis technology. All models now come equipped with variable-ratio sports steering, allowing drivers to enjoy precise and responsive handling. The electric variants of the 5-Series benefit from rear-axle air suspension and stroke-dependent shock absorbers, which provide an additional layer of hydraulic damping for a smooth and controlled ride, even on challenging road surfaces.

In addition to these advancements, the BMW i5 M60 will soon offer active roll stabilization with upgraded 48-volt electrics. This feature utilizes electric motors to control an anti-roll bar, further enhancing stability and cornering capabilities. With these technological innovations, BMW ensures that driving the 5-Series remains a thrilling and engaging experience, whether you choose the electric or combustion variant.

The BMW i5 will be made at Plant Dingolfing, BMW's largest European plant, where the electric motors and the high-voltage batteries are also built. In Europe, deliveries of the new BMW 5 Series will start in October 2023, including the two electric i5 variants from the outset. The plug-in hybrids will follow in spring 2024. Prices start at 57,550 euros for the 520i. The all-electric models start at 70,200 euros for the i5 eDrive40.

US prices start at $67,795 for the i5 eDrive40 and $85,095 for the i5 M60 xDrive (including $995 shipping). The pricing clearly targets the Mercedes-Benz EQE and significantly undercuts the similarly sized Tesla Model S.
