The Swedish automaker has recently unveiled its latest creation, the 2024 Volvo EX30, which not only marks their smallest SUV to date but also represents their most affordable electric offering with a starting price of $34,950.

A City-Friendly and Affordable EV Option

The Volvo EX30 has been introduced as a more city-friendly and cost-effective alternative to its larger siblings, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge electric SUVs. Priced at just $34,950 in the United States, the EX30 aims to make electric mobility accessible to a wider audience. In Europe, the starting price is estimated to be around 36,000 euros, a pricing strategy that aligns the EX30 with conventional internal combustion engine-powered SUVs of similar size.

Design and Dimensions

Measuring 166.6 inches (4,233 millimeters) in length, 72.3 inches (1,837 mm) in width, and 61.2 inches (1,555 mm) in height, the Volvo EX30 boasts a compact footprint designed to navigate urban environments with ease. Volvo has taken full advantage of the car's smaller dimensions, optimizing the chassis for agility and maneuverability. The EX30's low center of gravity and evenly distributed weight contribute to its handling and stability. With a minimum curb weight of 4,034 pounds (1,830 kg), the EX30 strikes an ideal balance between efficiency and performance.

Styling

Adopting a design language reminiscent of its larger sibling, the Volvo EX90, the EX30 features distinctive styling cues that exude elegance and sophistication. The closed shield grille, digital rendition of the Thor's Hammer headlights, split taillights, and a well-crafted dashboard layout create an aesthetic that is both modern and refined. However, it is important to note that the EX30 maintains its own unique identity. The ascending waistline, thick C-pillar, and pronounced wheel arches lend the EX30 a distinct personality, setting it apart from its larger counterpart.

Interior

Step inside the EX30, and you'll be greeted by a minimalist Scandinavian interior design combined with cutting-edge technology. The centerpiece of the dashboard is a 12.3-inch single-screen infotainment system that provides intuitive access to a host of features. Taking user experience to new heights, Volvo has collaborated with tech giants such as Google, Apple, and Qualcomm to ensure seamless integration of their services. Through their partnership with ECARX, Volvo delivers an exceptional infotainment platform, and customers can expect regular software updates over the air.

Power and Performance

The Volvo EX30 offers customers two powertrain options in the United States: the Single Motor Extended Range and the Twin Motor Performance. The Single Motor Extended Range configuration combines a rear-mounted electric motor generating 268 horsepower (200 kilowatts) and 253 pound-feet (343 Newton-meters) of torque with an extended-range battery boasting a usable capacity of 64 kilowatt-hours. This setup enables the EX30 to achieve an estimated range of 275 miles on a single charge.

For those seeking even more exhilarating performance, the Twin Motor Performance variant adds a front electric motor, resulting in an all-wheel-drive system and a combined output of 422 horsepower (315 kW) and 400 lb-ft (543 Nm) of torque. With a blistering 0-60 mph acceleration time of just 3.4 seconds, the EX30 Twin Motor Performance proudly claims the title of Volvo's fastest-accelerating production car to date. This dual-motor model features the same 64-kWh NMC battery and is estimated to offer a range of approximately 265 miles.

Charging Made Convenient

Volvo understands the importance of a seamless charging experience for EV owners. With DC charging peak power of up to 153 kW for the NMC battery-powered variants, the EX30 can achieve a 10-80 percent charging cycle in a little over 26.5 minutes. The LFP battery version charges at up to 134 kW, requiring approximately 26 minutes for the same charging cycle.

Availability

Orders for the EX30 Cross Country are expected to open in 2024, with production slated to begin later that year.
