Lexus has unveiled wide-ranging upgrades to its popular urban crossover, the UX 300e. As the brand's first all-electric model, the UX 300e has been enhanced to provide a more appealing and enjoyable driving experience. The upgrades include improvements in driving range, cabin aesthetics, and multimedia functionality.

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of a new 72.8 kWh battery system, which replaces the original 54.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. It powers a compact motor/generator that drives the front wheels, producing 150 kW (204 DIN hp) and up to 300 Nm of torque, providing smooth and linear acceleration. The motor also generates electricity during braking or coasting, improving overall efficiency.

Previously, the UX 300e offered a range of 305-315 km (189-196 miles) in the WLTP combined driving cycle, depending on options such as wheel size. The new battery system significantly extends this range by over 40%. Models equipped with 17-inch wheels achieve a WLTP combined range of up to 450 km (280 miles), while models with 18-inch wheels can reach up to 440 km (273 miles), depending on options.

The UX 300e's aerodynamic efficiency also contributes to its increased range. Enlarged underfloor covers and a flat, smooth bottom surface of the battery enhance underbody aerodynamics, maximizing efficiency and optimizing the vehicle's performance.

To ensure electric efficiency and battery longevity, the UX 300e is equipped with advanced sensors that monitor battery cell voltage and temperature. The Battery Management System maximizes usable battery capacity and extends driving range. The battery pack is equipped with cooling elements to stabilize battery output, even at high speeds and during repeated charging. Heating elements under each battery module minimize the impact of cold weather on the driving range and ensure full power is available from the start. These features ensure optimal performance and longevity of the battery system.

The vehicle is equipped with an AC port on the right-side quarter panel for normal charging and a DC port on the left-side quarter panel for rapid charging. With rapid charging, the battery can be charged up to 80% in just 80 minutes at a maximum current of 125A. AC charging, on the other hand, takes approximately 9 hours and 30 minutes to fully charge the battery at 32A. Importantly, electrical equipment such as air conditioning and audio can still be used while the UX 300e is being charged.

UX 300e owners can monitor the battery status, available driving range, and remaining charging time through the Lexus Link app. The app also allows owners to schedule the charging start time remotely, enabling them to take advantage of off-peak energy tariffs and optimize their charging experience.

The UX 300e comes with a standard 8-year or 160,000 km (whichever comes first) warranty, covering battery capacity degradation below 70%. Additionally, a 5-year or 100,000 km warranty is provided for all functional defects of the BEV main battery. For extended coverage, customers can opt for the Extended BEV Care, which covers main battery defects and capacity degradation below 70% for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 km, provided that regular maintenance and servicing are conducted at authorized Lexus dealers. With Lexus' extensive experience in battery technologies, the actual capacity of the battery at the end of the coverage period is expected to exceed 85%.

The UX 300e's 2,640 mm wheelbase ensures a smooth and stable ride, while the tight 10.4 m curb-to-curb turning diameter allows for easy maneuverability in urban environments. The low center of gravity, achieved by locating the battery under the cabin, contributes to the UX 300e's driving dynamics. Aluminum is used for the side doors, wings, and hood, while composite materials are used for the tailgate, further optimizing weight distribution. The battery's placement also increases the boot space from 320 to 367 liters (deck to luggage cover), compared to the UX 250h hybrid model.

The driving experience of the UX 300e has been further enhanced through various improvements. Fine-tuning of the electric power steering and shock absorbers, as well as increased body rigidity, results in improved driving dynamics, providing a planted feel and enhanced responsiveness. The UX features Lexus Drive Mode Select, which allows drivers to tailor their driving experience. Normal mode provides a balanced performance and range, while ECO mode maximizes energy savings by optimizing throttle response and air conditioning operation. Sport mode delivers quicker throttle response and increased steering feel, providing a more dynamic driving experience.

The cabin of the UX 300e offers a serene and quiet environment for occupants. Underfloor covers and other noise-suppressing measures ensure minimal road noise intrusion. The UX 300e is also equipped with the latest generation nanoe X air purification technology, which helps maintain a healthy and fresh cabin environment. This technology deodorizes bad odors, inhibits the growth of mold, and suppresses viruses, bacteria, pollen, and allergens. The nanoe X system has been proven to inhibit over 99% of viruses and bacteria in just one hour and reduces odors by 1.8. Additionally, it keeps the skin smooth and well-hydrated by preventing moisture evaporation.

The UX 300e's multimedia system has been significantly upgraded to provide a more user-friendly and connected experience. The new system features a touchscreen interface, replacing the previous touchpad control. The intuitive controls, increased functionality, and improved connectivity allow for seamless operation and easy access to various features. The screen sizes have been enlarged, offering sharper graphics, with options ranging from 8 to 12.3 inches. The screen is now positioned 143 mm further forwards for better visibility and interaction.

A new voice recognition system, including the "Hey Lexus" on-board assistant, enables voice commands for tasks such as making phone calls, operating audio and climate controls, and searching the internet. The system understands conversational terms, recognizes the speaker, and filters out background noise, eliminating the need to mute the audio when giving commands.

The UX 300e provides "always connected" cloud-based navigation, offering real-time road and traffic information to aid in journey planning and avoid delays. The 12.3-inch system includes embedded navigation, ensuring uninterrupted operation even without a cloud connection. The multimedia system also integrates smartphone functionality through Apple CarPlay (wireless connection) or Android Auto (wired connection). The Lexus Link smartphone app further enhances connectivity by allowing remote locking or unlocking of the doors, triggering hazard lights, and setting air conditioning or heating settings. The app also provides real-time information on battery charge level, available range with or without air conditioning, and remaining charging time.

The UX 300e's interior and exterior have undergone refinements to enhance its overall appeal. The leather upholstery features a new Kagome pleating effect inspired by traditional Japanese basket weave, while a striking geometric stitchwork pattern inspired by the Sashiko quilting technique adds a unique touch. A new Hazel color option is available for both fabric and leather upholstery.

The dashboard trim now resembles the grain of traditional Japanese washi paper, and the upper part of the instrument panel is black across all trims, adding to the cabin's premium feel. Sonic Platinum, a new paintwork option, is made possible by Lexus' advanced sonic paint technology. This finish incorporates a micron-thin layer that aligns metallic flakes in the paint, resulting in enhanced brilliance and depth across the car's bodywork.

Lexus has also improved the hands-free power-operated rear tailgate, which now responds more promptly and moves more gently during opening and closing.

Safety features have been enhanced in the UX 300e with the inclusion of Intersection Turning Assist, which detects oncoming vehicles and pedestrians when turning at an intersection, and Emergency Assist, which provides small corrective inputs to prevent unintentional lane departure. Curve Speed Reduction, integrated into the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, automatically adjusts the vehicle's speed according to the bend in the road.

These additions complement the existing Lexus Safety System +, which includes Pre-Collision System, Lane Tracing Assist, and Road Sign Assist. Other driving assistance features include Panoramic View Monitor, Parking Support Alert, Lexus Parking Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Braking, and Blind Spot Monitor.

The upgraded UX 300e will be available in showrooms across Europe starting from spring 2023. It follows the earlier upgrades made to the two other UX variants, the self-charging hybrid electric UX 250h and the petrol-powered UX 200, which were released in the summer of 2022.
