BYD, a Chinese automotive brand, has introduced a new SUV-focused sub-brand called Fang Cheng Bao. Their first model, the Leopard 5, is a plug-in hybrid ladder-frame off-roader designed to rival the Toyota Land Cruiser.

Fang Cheng Bao unveiled the Leopard 5 at an event in China ahead of its official debut at the Chengdu Auto Show on August 25. The SUV looks pretty rugged. It has boxy fenders, aluminum-style skid plates, a rear-mounted spare wheel and classic off-road proportions, along with modern styling cues borrowed from rival models. Depending on the trim, it comes with 18-inch wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich A/T tires or 20-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport road rubber.

With a length of 4,890 mm (192.5 inches), a width of 1,970 mm (77.6 inches), a height of 1,920 mm (75.6 inches) and a wheelbase of 2,800 mm (110.2 inches), it is slightly smaller than the new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. This explains the two-row, five-seat layout inside the tech-rich cabin, which reportedly gets a 50-inch head-up display, a large infotainment touchscreen, another display for the front passenger, and a premium Devialet sound system.

The Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5 is based on a ladder frame architecture and is equipped with the DMO (Dual Mode Off-Road) plug-in hybrid system. It consists of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and two electric motors with a combined output of more than 670 hp (500 kW / 680 hp) and 760 Nm (560 lb-ft) of torque. Power is transmitted to all four wheels via a 4WD system with three differential locks.

A floor-mounted BYD Blade battery with a capacity of 30 kWh provides an EV-only CLTC range of 78 miles (125 km) and a combined range of 746 miles (1,200 km) when the 80-liter gasoline tank is included in the equation.

The company also offers a high-specification variant of the Leopard 5 equipped with Cloud-P chassis technology. This features an active and height-adjustable hydraulic suspension that borrows components from the YangWang U8, albeit without the predictive features.

Fang Cheng Bao will begin sales in China with 100 stores in 60 cities, although the company is rumored to be considering exporting its vehicles to other markets. Prices for Fang Cheng Bao models are expected to be in the ¥400,000-600,000 ($55,000-82,000) range.
