Volkswagen has unveiled preliminary images of the estate variant of its all-electric flagship model, the ID.7, now dubbed the ID.7 Tourer. The automaker plans to disclose the final design in the next few months and aims for a European launch in 2024.

The ID.7 Tourer serves as a more utilitarian sibling to the ID.7 sedan, which has recently started to appear in Volkswagen's European dealerships. With an aerodynamically refined body, the ID.7 Tourer will feature a drag coefficient of 0.24, marginally less aerodynamic than its sedan counterpart, which has a Cd value of 0.23.

Practicality is often the main selling point for wagons, and the ID.7 Tourer is no exception. Volkswagen's first carbon-neutral estate will offer 545 liters of cargo space with five passengers onboard. Folding the rear seats expands this to a generous 1,714 liters.

When compared to the upcoming 2024 Volkswagen Passat wagon, the ID.7 Tourer has a notably smaller cargo area. The Passat, available only as a wagon, boasts 690 liters of cargo space, which can be expanded to 1,920 liters when the rear seats are folded down—140 liters more than its predecessor, the previous Passat Variant.

Details about the ID.7 Tourer's powertrain have yet to be disclosed, but Volkswagen states that the model will utilize the company's MEB platform. It is anticipated that the wagon will adopt the electric motor setup of the ID.7 sedan, which features a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 286 horsepower. The current ID.7 is available with either 77- or 89-kilowatt-hour batteries and a WLTP-estimated range of up to 621 km (430 miles).

The ID.7 Tourer will be produced at Volkswagen's Emden factory in Germany. Additional details and full-scale images of the new model will be released in the forthcoming months.
