Hyundai's latest innovation, the 'Uni Wheel,' promises to significantly shrink electric vehicle (EV) motors by integrating essential drive components into the wheel.

Unlike traditional in-hub motors, the Uni Wheel relocates the reduction gear into the wheel hub, enabling the use of smaller motors for each wheel. This breakthrough offers performance and safety benefits by powering each wheel individually, allowing for independent vehicle corner response.

The innovative design of the Uni Wheel's gear system allows for movement within the hub while maintaining power transfer. This eliminates the need for a Constant Velocity (CV) joint, enhancing power delivery and driving range by reducing efficiency losses. Additionally, this technology offers greater control over vehicle ride height, aiding in aerodynamics and ground clearance without impacting performance.

Hyundai's Uni Wheel is adaptable, fitting in wheels as small as four inches for personal mobility devices, and scaling up to 25 inches for larger vehicles like cars and SUVs. The company has rigorously tested the unit for durability, showing promising results. While the production timeline remains undisclosed, Hyundai has secured patents in key markets including Korea, Europe, and the United States.
