Hyundai Mobis, a subsidiary of the Hyundai Motor Group specializing in automotive parts, has unveiled a groundbreaking concept car at CES 2024 with the aim of redefining parking convenience. The Mobion Concept showcases remarkable sideways and diagonal maneuverability that surpasses the capabilities of any production vehicle.

Derived from the fusion of 'Mobis' and 'On,' the Mobion Concept is based on the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5. However, it boasts distinctive lighting, bumpers, and wheels to distinguish itself as a unique innovation. Its primary purpose is to showcase a next-generation e-Corner System, enabling steering from both the front and rear axles, thereby facilitating unparalleled sideways and diagonal movement. Think of it as an evolution of the GMC Hummer EV's Crab Walk feature, but with even greater practicality.

The e-Corner System utilizes four small motors in each wheel, a departure from the conventional single large motor per axle setup. This innovation enables each wheel to operate independently, with braking, steering, and suspension functions integrated within each wheel.

Compared to its previous iteration, where the technology was concealed within a standard Ioniq 5, the Mobion Concept features new LED lights on the front and rear bumpers. These lights serve more than just an aesthetic purpose; the front lights can indicate the direction in which a pedestrian is crossing the street, while the rear lights can signal other drivers not to change lanes when pedestrians or obstacles are detected.

The system incorporates two short-distance LiDAR sensors positioned near each headlight, supplemented by a single long-distance LiDAR sensor in the center to detect nearby objects. Furthermore, the Mobion can perform Ground Projection, illuminating the ground to indicate its movement direction and even creating crosswalk stripes for pedestrians when detected.

In the accompanying video, Hyundai demonstrates the Mobion's remarkable capabilities for effortless driving. Instead of executing a standard U-turn, it can perform a "Zero Turn," pivoting 360 degrees within its wheelbase by simultaneously turning the front and rear wheels. The Crab Drive function allows it to drive sideways, exemplified by its ability to approach a ticket gate without the need to move forward or backward. Other maneuvers, such as the Pivot Turn, Diagonal Drive, and Reverse Drive, make the Mobion significantly more maneuverable in tight spaces compared to conventional vehicles, even those equipped with rear-axle steering.

While currently a concept, Hyundai's ultimate objective is to transform these cutting-edge technologies into practical solutions for real-world applications.
