Honda showcased several exciting exhibits at this year's Tokyo Auto Salon, but one of them particularly caught the attention of Japanese enthusiasts. The 2024 Honda Civic RS Prototype provides a glimpse of a sportier variant of the hatchback, featuring a manual gearbox. This model aims to bridge the gap between the standard Civic models and the high-performance Civic Type R.

The Civic RS wowed the audience with its striking full-black exterior, lending it a stealthy and captivating presence. Notably, the front bumper has been redesigned with more defined contours and slimmer side intakes. Honda also added distinctive red RS emblems on both ends, creating a stunning contrast against the black finish. These subtle visual enhancements give the new trim an appearance reminiscent of a milder version of the Type R, while the rest of the bodywork and alloy wheels remain consistent with the standard Civic Hatchback.

For Japanese buyers, the Honda Civic is currently only available with a CVT automatic transmission. However, this will change in the fall of 2024 with the introduction of the manual-equipped Civic RS.

While Honda has not disclosed specific engine details, it is highly likely that the car will be equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine. More significantly, Honda has promised "further refinements to enhance the driving experience," suggesting improvements in the chassis setup to complement its sportier appearance.

Reading between the lines, the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Civic RS may align closely with the specifications of the US-market Civic Si. The latter boasts features such as a limited-slip differential, rev-matching technology, firmer springs, adjusted dampers, thicker stabilizer bars, larger brakes, and a 200 hp (149 kW) turbocharged 1.5-liter engine.

We will learn more information about the 2024 Honda Civic RS as we get closer to its debut in Japan this fall.
