Mazda has officially announced the discontinuation of sales of its flagship Mazda6 sedan and station wagon in the Japanese market. Production of the cars for domestic sales will end in mid-April 2024.

The Mazda6, aka Mazda Atenza in Japan, was born in May 2002 as the successor to the Mazda 626. The new car at that time symbolised a radical change in design and the brand's "Zoom-Zoom" philosophy. Since then, three generations of Mazda6 have already been launched. The current, third generation, has been produced since 2012. In just 22 years, 226,437 Mazda6/Atenza units have been sold in Japan.

The Mazda6's departure from the Japanese market follows the cessation of sales in the US and UK in 2021 and 2023 respectively. Judging by the tone of the short press release, the Mazda6 will not have an immediate successor. The main focus will now be on the CX crossover line-up.

While the Mazda6 sedan and station wagon are still available in Europe for now, it looks like it won't be for long. However, even if Mazda6 is finally taken off the assembly line in Japan, it will not mean its immediate death. The matter is that besides Japan Mazda6 is produced in China for the local market. And considering that sedans are still extremely popular in China, Mazda6 will live there.
