The BMW G61 goes beyond the 5 meter mark and is also available as a fully electric i5.

The BMW 5 Series sedan (G60) is now accompanied by the 5-door Touring (G61), and there is also an all-electric i5 Touring available for the first time.

The new BMW 5 Series /i5 Touring is not a surprise, as it shares similarities with the sedan up to the B-pillar. A flexible drive architecture allows for the production of different model variants, including gasoline and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid systems, and purely electric drive, all on a single production line at the BMW Dingolfing plant.

Dimensions

Similar to the sedan, the Touring variant has a significant increase in dimensions. The numbers speak for themselves: Compared to the previous model, the 5 Series Touring has grown in length by 97 millimeters to 5,060 millimeters, in width by 32 millimeters to 1,900 millimeters, and in height by 17 millimeters to 1,515 millimeters.

According to BMW, the new 5 Series Touring has the largest wheelbase in its competitive environment, with a value increased by 20 millimeters to 2,995 millimeters. In simpler terms, it now has a wheelbase that in the past would have been seen on a 7 Series.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring provides more space, particularly in the rear, with improved leg, shoulder, and elbow room. It also offers optimized acoustic comfort. The wider luggage compartment opening, along with the deep loading sill, allows for easy and comfortable storage of large items of luggage.

All versions of the new BMW 5 Series Touring, regardless of their drive technology, offer a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded from 570 to a maximum of 1,700 liters. Standard equipment includes automatic tailgate operation and remote unlocking of the rear seat backrest, which can be split 40:20:40, from the trunk.

Internal combustion engines

All diesel engines offered for the new BMW 5 Series Touring come with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The 520d Touring and 520d xDrive Touring models, available at the launch, have a four-cylinder engine that produces a maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. In summer 2024, a six-cylinder in-line diesel will be added to the lineup. Additionally, two plug-in hybrid models, including the 530e, will be introduced later.

All-electric BMW 5 Series Touring

The BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring features two drive units on the front and rear axles, creating an electric all-wheel drive with a power output of up to 442 kW (601 hp). When the M Launch Control or M Sport Boost function is activated, the system torque can reach up to 820 Nm. This top model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and has a maximum speed of 230 km/h.

The electric motor of the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring, located on the rear axle, produces a maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm when using the Sport Boost or Launch Control function. With these features, the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds.

Both models have a high-voltage battery located in the underbody, providing a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. The WLTP test procedure determines a range of 445 to 506 kilometers for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring and 483 to 560 kilometers for the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring. The battery can be charged using a DC charger with a maximum output of 205 kW.

Interior

The cockpit design centers around the BMW Curved Display. With a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display, it forms a fully digital display network. The new standard sports seats, the flattened lower area of the steering wheel, and the optional BMW Interaction Bar enhance the interior ambiance.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring comes with a vegan interior as standard. The Veganza version offers optional decorative perforation on the seating surfaces. There are also several bicolor versions of the BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery. Optional highlights include a fixed panoramic glass roof and the Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system with up to 18 speakers.

Suspension

The BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring offers a range of performance-enhancing features. Options include an M sports suspension, an M sports brake system, and the Adaptive Suspension Professional. This advanced suspension system features electronically controlled shock absorbers, integral active steering, and new lateral dynamics management. For even more dynamic driving, the top model also offers the Adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll stabilization and Active Roll Comfort.

Technologies

The new BMW 5 Series Touring comes with standard Parking Assistant, which includes approach monitoring, trailer assistant, reversing camera, and reversing assistant. Optionally, the Parking Assistant Professional allows for automated parking and maneuvering up to 200 meters using a smartphone. Partially automated driving, including on highways, is available at an additional cost.

Pricing and market launch

The market launch in Germany is scheduled for May 25, 2024, followed by other markets in June 2024. Prices in this country start at 61,750 euros for the 520d, while the all-wheel drive version is priced at 64,350 euros. The i5 Touring ranges from 72,200 euros (eDrive40) to 101,500 euros (M60 xDrive).
