Volvo's 17.3-litre six-cylinder diesel engine develops up to 780 hp and 3,800 Nm versus the 770 hp and 3,700 Nm of the V8 engine in the Scania 770 S.

The power race among European heavy-duty trucks is back on, with Volvo Trucks unveiling the new D17A engine for its legendary FH16 model.

The new engine has three power levels; 600, 700 and 780 hp. Torque levels have been increased to 3000 Nm, 3400 Nm and 3800 Nm in the top version.

"I’m proud to present our new engine. It really is a masterpiece and the result of world-class engineering. The 780 version is the strongest engine in the industry," said Marcos Weingaertner, Product Manager, Volvo Trucks.

The D17 is equipped with a single turbocharger, which enhances the engine's responsiveness. Volvo Trucks engineers say the design of the company's patented wave-shaped pistons optimises combustion and reduces emissions, while a new injection system ensures fuel economy and increased peak cylinder pressure contributes to high power output.

The new D17 engine is certified to run on biofuel (HVO) and is prepared for the future Euro VII emissions standard, while the 700hp version is also certified to run on 100 per cent biodiesel (B100). The gearbox has been updated to handle torque up to 3,800 Nm.

Sales of the Volvo FH16 with the new engine are scheduled to start in mid-2024. Production is scheduled to start in the second half of 2024.
