BMW has identified a battery problem in one BMW i5 and three 2024 model year i4s for the US market. Only one of the vehicles was owned by the owner and the company contacted him on 16 February. The other three have not yet been sold and will be repaired before being handed over to the owners.
The solution to the problem will be relatively simple, albeit thorough, as BMW plans to remove the high-voltage battery modules from the vehicles in question and replace them with brand new ones.
The company was able to address the problem so quickly because engineers noticed a defect in a welded joint in the battery module of one of the cars in early February. BMW examined records of the assembly process of this cell and found that the laser welding process between the battery cell contact system and the terminal had not been done correctly.
It then determined that the defect could cause the battery to overheat and, in rare cases, catch fire. Since it was BMW that contacted the owner of the car with the defect in the battery and not the other way around, it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem.
