The new ID.3 GTX is Volkswagen's first electric hot hatch, available in two performance levels with up to 326 hp (240 kW).

We had to wait a long time for this derivative, but now the time has finally come: In a world premiere, Volkswagen is presenting the sporty ID.3 GTX - the new top model in the series. A special feature is that the power unit is available in two performance levels: The range starts with the new efficiency drive in the 286 hp (210 kW) version. The ID.3 GTX Performance brings even more power into play with 326 hp (240 kW). Both GTX versions convert their power into propulsion via the rear axle.

According to VW, the new 79 kWh battery, located in the sandwich floor and exactly in the middle of the vehicle, offers a sporty, low centre of gravity and ideal axle load distribution. It supports DC charging at 175 kilowatts, which recharges the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in around 26 minutes. With a fully charged battery, the ID.3 GTX models can cover an estimated 600 km in the combined WLTP cycle.

The rear-wheel-drive hot hatch hits 100 km/h in six seconds for the standard GTX, or 5.6 seconds if you upgrade to GTX Performance. Top speeds are electronically limited to 178 and 200 km/h respectively. VW says the more powerful of the two models is an electric companion to the front-wheel-drive Golf GTI Clubsport.

As with the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX, VW has made the ID.3 GTX look even more exciting with a redesigned front bumper with a larger air intake and diamond pattern flanked by boomerang LEDs that act as daytime running lights. At the rear, the performance model gets a diffuser with a glossy black finish to match the dark mirror caps, side skirts and window frames. There are also new 20-inch wheels.

Inside, there are plenty of red accents. There are electrically adjustable, sporty front seats with integrated headrests, GTX badging and upholstery made from recycled materials. All ID.3s get a new 12.9-inch infotainment system and a separate driving mode selector on the steering column. Better late than never, the touch controls for volume and air conditioning are finally illuminated, much like the recently launched Golf Mk8.5.

The ID.3 GTX and ID.3 GTX Performance will be launched later this year.
