During a conversation on the Wolf YouTube channel, Olivier François, CEO of Fiat, revealed that the company plans to reintroduce the Multipla as a compact SUV, based on the developments of the Citroën C4 Aircross and the Opel Frontera.
The origins of the Multipla go back to the 1950s, when it was created as a family car based on the popular 600 model. Its second generation came at the end of the 1990s as a compact minivan with six seats. The Multipla was built from 1999 to 2010. The new, third generation of the Multipla, known as the UV5, will now have seven seats and will be based on the Stellantis Group's cost-efficient Smart Car Platform. With a length of around 4.40 metres and the option of a combustion engine or fully electric drive, the new Multipla is positioning itself as a global, cost-effective model.
It will be offered not only in Europe but also in South America and will compete with models such as the Dacia Duster. Production is already planned for next year in Morocco.
Aesthetically, the Multipla will be modelled on the "Giga-Panda", a prototype of the Fiat Concept SUV, and thus draw on the retro designs of the original Panda from the 1980s. Its angular and robust appearance is intended to emphasise Fiat's striving for uniqueness. In order to reduce costs and increase environmental friendliness, Fiat wants to do without chrome, leather and certain alloys.
