Stellantis' Chief Technology Officer for hydrogen fuel cell development, Jean-Michel Billig, delved into specifics during an interview with "Welt am Sonntag." He detailed that the 5500 FCEV is built on the versatile Ram 5500 chassis cab which offers both regular and crew cab variants. This model is a pivotal element of Ram's broader strategy to introduce four electrified trucks within two years—including the anticipated 1500 REV and a fresh hydrogen solution.
With its production strategically located in Mexico, Ram aims at robust market penetration. The division under Stellantis focuses heavily on integrating advanced hydrogen fuel technology—a move poised to streamline operational efficiencies while environmental regulations tighten. Meanwhile, Stellantis also oversees low-volume production in Poland specifically for the European market, featuring models such as the 1500 RHO.
The Ram 5500 HD is generally sold as a crew cab in the U.S., making it much larger than previous FCEV pickups. Toyota has also unveiled an FCEV pickup for European and Asian markets, but U.S. plans have not yet been announced.
