When BMW launched the second-generation X2 last year, it made the crossover-coupe significantly larger, leading to questions about the future of the X4. BMW has now confirmed that the X4 will be discontinued.

The company explained to Motor1 Italy that the overlap between the X2 and the X4 in size and price means there's no longer a need for both models. Customers looking for a larger, more luxurious coupe-style SUV can opt for the X6.

For those who need something between the X2 and the X6, the new X3 is positioned as the alternative. Unlike the front-wheel-drive-based X2, the X3 continues with rear-wheel-drive underpinnings and offers a six-cylinder engine in the new M50 model.

BMW has not specified when production of the X4 will end, but with the revamped X3's deliveries starting late this year, it's likely that the X4 will be phased out by 2025. While the X2 is not a direct replacement for the X4, BMW believes customers in this segment won't significantly miss the distinction between front- and rear-wheel drive.

Interestingly, while the combustion-engine X4 is being discontinued, an indirect successor might appear. BMW Blog reports that a fully electric iX4 is planned for around 2027 on the Neue Klasse platform. BMW aims to launch at least six EVs on this new platform by 2028, including the already confirmed iX3 in 2025 and the i3 sedan in 2026.
