Mazda informed Motor1 that while the 2.0-liter engine can no longer be ordered in Europe, there are still a few cars with this engine in stock. Once these are sold, the 2.0-liter option will be gone for good.
The 1.5-liter engine produces 131 PS and 150 N⋅m of torque, which is 53 PS and 55 Nm less than the larger engine. However, the Miata with the 1.5-liter engine is slightly lighter and has a more rev-happy character. Additionally, it is cheaper than its 2.0-liter counterpart.
Will Mazda offer a Miata with a bigger engine in Europe again? It’s uncertain. While it seems unlikely for the ND model, the next-generation Miata will likely be partially electrified, which could allow for a larger engine while meeting stricter emissions standards. However, it's too early to confirm this.
A new MX-5 model is probably several years away, with the recently launched ND3 expected to stay on the market for a while. A 35th Anniversary Edition is coming later this year, but if it only features the 2.0-liter engine, it won't be available in Europe.
