Electrically driven turbines are used in automobiles, but have not been used in motorbikes until now. In Honda's concept, the electric turbine is designed for large displacement engines. Such a turbine ensures stable air pressure regardless of engine speed. This means that even at low revs, the engine delivers high power and remains responsive.
The turbine is compact enough that Honda's engineers were able to rationalise all the components under the seat of the motorbike and achieve the desired weight distribution. In addition, the system does not need an intercooler, and the prototype motorbike has a second battery and a more powerful alternator to power the turbine's electric motor.
Honda says the development of the new V3 with a 75-degree cylinder camber angle was an important step in the development of internal combustion engines for motorbikes. The company is already preparing mass production of the new engine, although it has not specified which model it will be installed in.
