Toyota has abandoned conventional petrol versions of the Corolla model in Japan. Now in the brand's homeland, the sedan, hatchback and station wagon can be bought only with hybrid powertrains.

Japanese buyers will only be able to choose a hybrid version of the Corolla with a 1.8-litre engine. In Europe, Toyota implemented a similar policy back in 2022, abandoning petrol versions of the popular model. However, unlike the European market, there is no more powerful hybrid with a 2.0-litre engine in Japan.

The hybrid powertrain combines a 1.8-litre 97bhp petrol motor and a 94bhp electric motor in front-wheel drive versions. All-wheel drive (E-Four) is realised by an additional 40bhp electric motor on the rear axle.

Although the current, 12th generation Corolla has been in production since 2018 and underwent a restyling in 2022, Toyota continues to maintain interest in the model through point refinements. For example, this model year in Japan, mid-level versions get more standard equipment, including front and rear DVRs and a digital key.

The list of active safety systems has also been expanded, with Blind Spot Monitor, Safe Exit Assist and Parking Support Brake now standard on most trims. Sedan and station wagon Touring version G received LED fog lights and new 16-inch alloy wheels. The base X version retains the 15-inch steel wheels and a simpler interior. All versions are now fitted with LED headlights.

The updated Corolla Sport hatchback is available now, with the sedan and station wagon going on sale on 19 May. Prices range from ¥2,279,200 (approximately $15,700) for the base Corolla Hybrid X to ¥3,416,600 (approximately $23,500) for the top-of-the-line Touring Active Sport Hybrid E-Four. Depending on equipment, the price increase ranged from ¥11,200 to ¥226,600 (roughly $80 to $1,600) over previous versions.

No further plans for the model have yet been announced by Toyota, but a new generation Corolla with an improved hybrid system, updated styling and more advanced technology is expected to be released in 2026.
