Xiaomi is preparing to launch a more affordable version of the YU7 electric crossover with a CATL battery and reduced weight.

Information about the new modification of the Xiaomi YU7 crossover appeared in the database of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Key news: change of battery supplier, reduced weight, and quite possibly, a more attractive price for those not chasing a record range.

Technical "slimming" and new wheels

According to registration documents, the dimensions of the model remain unchanged. The body length is 4999 mm, the width is 1996 mm, and the height varies from 1600 to 1608 mm depending on suspension settings and selected wheels. However, the most interesting is hidden in the mass characteristics: the new base version weighs 2200 kg, which is 115 kg less than the current one.

In terms of design, Xiaomi decided to add a bit of personalization. Buyers will be offered new 20-inch wheels in two styles: "rice grain" and "plum blossom".

Powertrain and CATL battery

The new modification received a rear-wheel-drive layout with a single electric motor with a power of 235 kW (315 hp). But the main change is the use of a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL. It should be noted that the current Xiaomi YU7 versions use batteries with a capacity of 96.3 kWh. It seems that the reduction in vehicle weight is associated with the switch to a more compact battery pack, possibly 73 kWh, which is already used in the SU7 sedan.

Lower battery capacity automatically means lower cost. Today, prices for the current YU7 range from $36,700 to $47,800. The introduction of a simplified version will allow Xiaomi Auto to further aggressively undercut prices in a market where competition from Tesla and BYD is only intensifying.

Context and market situation

The launch of the YU7 in June 2025 was a real explosion: more than 200,000 orders in the first three minutes. However, data from March 2026 indicates that the initial excitement has subsided, and inventory levels are gradually stabilizing. The release of a cheaper modification is an expected move to maintain interest and attract those customers who previously considered the flagship SUV too expensive.
