The current generation of the MX-5 debuted back in 2014, and the model underwent the last major updates in 2018 and 2024. For the 2027 model year, the body remains unchanged, but the color palette has been expanded with a new Zinc Green shade. This color will also appear on the Mazda CX-30 crossover.
Additionally, a special Yakudo version was introduced, available exclusively for the soft top version. It is recognizable by the silver accents on the body, silver brake calipers, and Alcantara interior trim.
Homura for those who prioritize handling
Along with Yakudo, Kazari and Homura configurations remain. The latter is aimed at more active driving and has received a range of technical upgrades.
The equipment includes 16-inch black RAYS forged wheels, red Brembo calipers, Bilstein shock absorbers, and a front strut brace. Conceptually, this version is close to the American MX-5 Club, although different 17-inch wheels are used for the U.S. market.
Mazda MX-5
More power and a new engine sound
The most interesting changes are hidden under the hood. Due to stringent environmental requirements, Mazda no longer offers the 2.0-liter engine in most European countries. Therefore, the only available engine remains the naturally aspirated 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G.
For the 2027 model year, its power was increased from 130 to 134 hp. The maximum torque is 155 Nm. The manufacturer also changed the exhaust sound to make the driving experience more emotional.
Although the 4 hp increase is unlikely to drastically affect dynamics, for a car weighing just over a ton, even small changes can be noticeable.
Efficiency slightly improved
Along with the power increase, Mazda was able to slightly improve environmental performance. CO₂ emissions have been reduced from 140-142 to 139 g/km. The average fuel consumption in the WLTP cycle is now 6.1 l/100 km, compared to the previous 6.2-6.3 l/100 km.
The interior has remained practically unchanged. The car retained the multimedia system with an 8.8-inch display, which appeared after the 2024 update. The standard equipment now includes the Driver Attention Alert system.
Production has already started
Production of left-hand drive versions of the MX-5 for Europe began in May 2026. Production of right-hand drive modifications will start in September.
First deliveries to customers in European markets are also scheduled for September 2026. The manufacturer will announce prices closer to the start of sales.
Despite its advanced age by modern standards, the ND generation will remain on the assembly line at least until 2029. According to preliminary data, the next generation MX-5 will have some level of hybridization but will retain the key features of the model - compactness, low weight, and focus on driving pleasure.
