When switched on manually during the daytime, the VIS LightPool works like a normal rear light, making the cyclist more visible on the road. However, as soon as night falls, the built-in ambient light sensor automatically turns on a downward beam - it illuminates the rear wheel and pedals, and also creates a spot of light on the road on either side of the bike.
In night mode, the VIS LightPool slowly alternates between the two types of lighting. According to the developers, this feature helps drivers to understand that what they see ahead on the road is really a cyclist, and not a runner with a flashlight or a fixed object with a reflective element.
VIS LightPool can work in any weather, as it is protected from moisture according to the IP64 standard. The LEDs provide 105 lumens of light output, a claimed runtime of six hours, and a USB charging time of four hours.
Light & Motion is currently raising funds for Kickstarter to start mass production of VIS LightPool. The price for fundraisers is $65. The planned retail price is $80.
