A total of 30 Code Reds will be built by modifying 10 GT500s of each 2020-22 model year through a comprehensive body, chassis and powertrain upgrade that will cost you $209,995, and that doesn't include the cost of a donor.
The inspiration for the project, as well as its name Code Red, comes from an experimental one-off 2008 GT500 whose 5.4-liter V8 has been replaced with a twin-turbo setup. Shelby has taken the same route with the latest 5.2-liter GT500 engine, and the resulting powertrain produces over 1,000 horsepower. and 1356 Nm on ethanol E85.
The Fathouse Performance twin-turbo kit includes Kona twin-ball bearing turbos, stainless steel headers and 3-inch (76mm) pipes, while the engine itself gets custom Manley pistons and connecting rods, ARP studs and heavy duty timing chains, upgraded injectors and MoTec engine management system.
Of the exterior changes, Shelby supplies a carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber splitter, carbon fiber rear diffuser and a carbon fiber wing located above the Shelby's wide stern. There's also a fully adjustable suspension including height-adjustable springs, retuned MagneRide dampers and Shelby forged aluminum wheels. Inside, new leather upholstery, a CSM-numbered dashboard, embroidered floor mats, and a rear roll cage in place of a rear seat. Vehicles released in the 2022 model year also feature Shelby 60th Anniversary badges.
The changes are big, but before you get too excited about tearing down supercars at your local traffic lights, you should know that Shelby only sells Code Red for off-road use, and the upgrades will apparently void manufacturer warranty support.
