The IIHS tested automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems at night. For the experiment, 23 medium-sized cars and SUVs, as well as small pickup trucks with such systems, were selected. In daylight testing, 19 of these vehicles received top or high marks. However, at night, their effectiveness often decreases or even drops to zero.
The highest scores in night tests were received by:
- Ford Mustang Mach-E
- Nissan Pathfinder
- Toyota Camry
- Toyota Highlander.
Seven more cars did not reach the maximum score a little:
- Honda Accord
- Hyundai Palisade
- Hyundai Sonata
- nissan frontier
- Nissan Murano
- Subaru Ascent
- Subaru Outback
The work of AEB systems was rated as "satisfactory" in the following models:
- Chevrolet Traverse
- Ford Explorer
- Ford Maverick
- ford ranger
- Mazda CX-9
- Volkswagen Atlas
- Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
- Volkswagen Tiguan
The test of the remaining four models ended in failure. The automatic braking system at night could not recognize the pedestrian and did not work:
- Chevrolet Malibu
- Honda Pilot
- Nissan Altima
- Toyota Tacoma
According to the IIHS, three-quarters of pedestrian-on-vehicle collisions occur at night. Improvements to AEB systems that prove effective during the day will help make road traffic safer.
