Both Nio and Geely are already developing their own battery swap systems. Through this partnership, they plan to co-develop two battery-swapping standards, catering to both private and commercial vehicles. The collaboration will focus on designing EVs compatible with each other’s swap systems, streamlining battery swap operations, and enhancing battery asset management. Their joint efforts aim to broaden the scope of battery swapping, making it accessible to more EV owners.
This strategic alliance is crucial for Nio as it seeks to boost profitability amidst stiff competition from other Chinese automakers and global players like Tesla. Geely, unlike Changan, contributes significant experience to this venture with its existing network of 300 battery swapping stations. Though fewer than Nio's 2,100 stations, Geely has ambitious plans to establish 5,000 stations globally by 2025. Geely will continue expanding its network while also collaborating with Nio.
Eric Li, Geely's founder and chairman, emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing battery swapping technology. He notes Geely’s Yiyi Power's success in multiple cities and its ongoing nationwide expansion.
