The brand-new all-electric Porsche Macan now provides an option to generate synthetic acceleration sounds for bystanders. However, this feature comes at an additional cost.

Known as "Porsche Electric Sport Sound," this feature carries a price tag of $490 on top of the base price of the new Macan, which starts at $78,800. It's one of several optional extras that can raise the total cost of the model to as much as $160,000.

This option, listed under the "Performance" category in the Macan Electric's online configurator, is designed to "enhances the vehicle’s own sound and makes it sound even more emotional—both outside and inside the vehicle," according to Porsche.

Owners can easily activate or deactivate this sound feature using the Macan's central touchscreen.

Similar to many artificial propulsion sound systems available in today's electric vehicles, the "Porsche Electric Sport Sound" offers a blend of futuristic and familiar audio, resembling a combination of an alien spacecraft and a traditional combustion engine. It delivers a unique mix of a futuristic hum and a familiar rumble.

EVs are naturally quiet, providing a tranquil driving experience. However, this silence has led some manufacturers to experiment with synthetic acceleration sounds to cater to car buyers who miss the excitement of loud, rumbling gasoline engines. These soundscapes are typically transmitted into the cabin through speakers, but some automakers are also interested in making their EVs audibly distinctive to the outside world.

Porsche is among the manufacturers embracing this trend. Their electric sports sedan, the Taycan, also offers a sound package. Additionally, drivers of Hyundai's Ioniq 5N, a high-performance electric SUV, can choose from various sound profiles that simulate the dynamic sound of gear shifts, even though it operates with a single gear.

The compact SUV segment is one of Porsche's top-performing segments, and the upcoming model introduces the VW Group's Premium Platform Electric architecture. This platform will serve as the foundation for future EVs from both Porsche and Audi. All eyes are on the Macan to see how this platform performs, following several software-related challenges and delays faced by VW.
